Karma keeps every living thing in its control. Debt is the prime Karma that follows and affects a person. The Great Indian Epic compares the turbulence faced by a Great King to that of the agitated mind of a debt-trapped person giving that much prominence to debt. While the path of debt is not seen its strain is felt.
